Episode 67 :: The Cost of Doing Business with Tyler Dawley

The rancher who dreams big, and plans bigger
(Video + closed caption available on YouTube)

Tyler Dawley is a guy who has lived in one spot his entire life. That spot is Big Bluff Ranch, the family ranch.

Since he was a kid, driving the ranch truck looking through (not over) the steering wheel, he has found purpose and passion working with the land and animals. Starting in 2000, he has been driving innovations on the ranch. Trying everything from farmer's markets to grass-fed beef to pasture poultry to direct marketing. Currently, Big Bluff Ranch is one of the largest producers of organic, pasture raised, no corn/soy chicken on the west coast.

In this episode, Tyler is joining me to discuss all that he’s learned about running a commercial ranch over the years, and how he envisions the future of agriculture at large.

You’ll hear:

  • The history of Big Bluff Ranch, and how they got to chickens.

  • Why we think there is so much misinformation about the true cost of food

  • How Tyler got comfortable with offering his chickens at a relatively high price point

  • His approach to finding the “right” customer for Big Bluff Ranch chickens

  • The lessons he’s learned about preserving profit margins

And we wrap up the conversation exploring where Tyler sees room for innovation in the agriculture industry, and how that can preserve the legacy of farming for future generations.
